Architectural Technologist – Paint for an external Wall

Every now and then, I have to generate a spec for the painting of an external wall, either a brick or render surface, and both present the owner with a similar problem, in that the wall needs to breath, and that the paint used should be able to expell the vapour as it passes from inside the house to the external.

The specification is easy to generate, there are several specialist paint companies that sell paint that is designed to exist on the external wall and breath. The problem is making sure the client understands the need not to cut corners, and choose an alternative, cheaper option, and the colour choice is not bad.

My CPD is the continued research into wall dynamics, the movement of vapour and the way some paints, or for that matter, materials block the path of any vapour, and cause so many problems, such as mold growth behind and external surface, Spaulding of brick faces, when the freeze thaw cycle takes hold, or in the case of timber frame, wrotting of the main timber structure, all of which can be stopped, just by good specification and an understanding of how a house breaths.

My article on the nest and google creating live data is one way that some of these problems can be tracked and solved in real time! by alerting to the problem! ventilating vapour from a room, and turning up or down the heating.

Today's picture is absolutely nothing to do with the subject, it's just the meal we received last week at the CIAT awards do in London, we were luckly the chap next to me did not turn up, so we shared the very excellent meal, Freemasons hall provided, along with an excellent red to wash it down.
